End of Course Assessment
These are taken after Algebra, English 10, and Biology. The school counselor notifies students who do not pass the Algebra and English exams, as these two tests are now a graduation requirement. Results are mailed home. (This takes the place of the former ISTEP+ GQE.)
PSAT Information
The PSAT, Preliminary SAT, measures a student’s skills in critical reading, mathematics, and writing. These scores may be used to determine a student’s acceptance into college and eligibility for grant scholarships. The PSAT is also the National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (NMSQT) for juniors. Sophomores and juniors who plan on going to college should take the PSAT.
ASVAB Information
The ASVAB is a free test. If a student does not plan to take the SAT or ACT, it is strongly recommended. The Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery helps students match careers with their personal characteristics and measures technical as well as verbal and math skills. The test is used to determine eligibility for military service, but it in no way obligates the student for military service. The ASVAB test may be taken as a sophomore, junior, or senior.
SAT and ACT Fee Waivers
Students who qualify for free/reduced lunch, are a 21st Century Scholars, or are in the Success-Through Education program can qualify for up to two fee waivers--$56.50 for ACT and $52.50 for SAT. See Ms. McCarthy for more information.

It is recommended that students take the SAT near the end of the junior year and possibly again at the beginning of the senior year. Students may register at the link on this page. Which one: SAT or ACT?
The choice to take the ACT or SAT depends on you! In spite of their differences, neither test is more likely than the other to produce a great score. In fact, when viewing a comparison of the ACT and SAT, the vast majority of students perform comparably on both tests. You may want to consider taking both admission tests. Each one tests you in a different way, so you might opt to take both to see on which one you perform better.
Please Note: While the Guidance department and Career Center will provide the registration information and make every effort to encourage and assist with student participation in the appropriate testing, we must place the responsibility on the student to register for the appropriate tests. Please contact your child’s counselor or the Career Center with any questions.
